squeaky chic

When it comes to apparel, I do not often equate "cute" with "chic". By cute, I'm not referring to say.... a marimekko floral dress. I'm thinking more along the lines of slingbacks with a little mouse face at each toe. We are all in agreement that this is absurdly cute, non? The kind of cute that is adorable for a 6 year old but a bit silly for fully fledged femmes- even those intent on embracing their inner child? Never mind that these flats are by Marc Jacobs- they have ears people! When I saw them for sale online, I smiled but couldn't quite imagine anyone pulling them off. Enter Spanish model Laura Ponte. Somehow, despite the overwhelming cute quotient, she manages to look fiercely chic with mice on her feet. Her dress, with its '70s wallpaper pattern, and in particular, it's pairing with this year's ubiquitous black leggings, had the near inevitable potential to look affected, but somehow Señora Ponte pulls her bit of whimsy off as well as any icon would- Chanel bag on one arm, and newborn daughter on the other. Señora, I salute you. Who knew that mouse flats could be so indomitably chic?

**Thanks to Mrs. de Winter of Sobre Moda for the post and pictures!

I know it's weird when I first saw those shoes in a shop I laughed, then I saw a girl wearing them with all black and she looked really good...not for the cat owners amongst us though!

Eurobrat, I love your site! I saw these uber-cute marc jacobs flats when I was in new york in april. They really made an impression on me, but like you, I never really considered wearing them.
I'm glad Laura Ponte pulled them off! They are beyond adorable!

That is a rare feat, isn't it? I would have a hard time pulling something like that off without looking like a grade schooler.
Just linked your fabulous blog from mine. Had no idea you are a fellow Torontonian!

This just confirms my impression that mice are chic in France...I wondered when I saw furry black and white ones running all over a shop window on rue du Cherche-Midi..Gotta get me some mice accessories.

I'm so thrilled you're from Toronto!
Great site.
But about this pic - c'mon - the shoes only work 'cause she's holding a baby!

I saw these briefly on the Sak's or Bergdorf's website. And thus, my Marc Jacobs theroy I'd been working on for several seasons solidified, the mice shoes becoming center of this theory: Marc Jacobs patently dislikes women. It's all part of an Emperor-who-wore-no-clothing gag. I know I am in the minority but I hate his things! Hate!
