saturday style

It's a blissfully lazy Saturday afternoon, and I'm alternating between baking pumpkin pie for Canadian Thanksgiving (coming face to face with domestic goddess Nigella Lawson seems to have temporarily rubbed off on me) and flicking through Nylon's Book of Global Style.

Nylon's photographers only cover seven cities- albeit very stylish ones- so the book is not as 'global' as the name suggests, but as a compendium of mostly Western looks, it is well worth flipping through. The Tokyo section reminds me of Shoichi Aoki's wild FRUiTS, and of the teenage goth lolitas walking around Helsinki, Finland. Most inspirational to me [predictably] were the femmes in Copenhagen and Paris.

If you are interested in seeing style from cities not in the Nylon top seven, you can check out a brief photo-essay on Tehrani street fashion (Iran) and also visit the links under 'model citizens' in the sidebar on this page.

The problem with the nylon shots is that the cities are totally interchangeable-- at least judging from what I saw. If you saw one of the outfits without an identifying background you'd have no idea which city it originated from...

Whereas the Iranian photos were gorgeous and extremely specific to the locale.

Non?

Copenhagen was one of my favorite favorite places to style watch... skirts, scarfs, boots and all-things-stylie mobile on old school bicyles!!! much fun...

I will have to check this nylon out--looks good!!

I love seeing these agitations of passions from the global streets; and the ones from Iran and Japan are phantasms from another catagory of thought.

sara: merci :)

lacey: yes! skirts, scarves, boots, and bicycles (with flowers wound around the front basket bien sur) are my ultimate necessities for fall.

p.s. These shots are from a book on street style by the editors of Nylon- it isn't a magazine issue.

So jealous that you are off to Europe in two days!

j: I agree.

Oh. WOW! Was it a book signing? Two absolutely beautiful, talented women.

jesse: Giada is NOTHING compared to Nigella! Such blasphemy! :)

julia: Aw. Merci! She was wonderful- the accent, the huge brown eyes, the messy scrawl. Queen of gastroporn.

Awesome idea for an article.

I personally loved the fashion in Helsinki. Everyone had these loooooong ass scarves that they wrapped around them in a way like no other. My aunt took pity on me and gave me one of hers and before I knew it, I was strutting it like the Finns.

Except that I was still freezing my ass off. And it was May.
